The ancient inhabitants (probably the Maohis) built fish traps in the channel of Fauna Nui, the large lake that separates the airport motu from the main island on the Maeva side. This primitive form of aquaculture keeps the catch alive, a labyrinth traps the fish, preventing them from finding their way out. Built with volcanic rocks, they worked until the beginning of the 19th century and were then abandoned. Today, they have resumed their function. The setting is simply enchanting.
