MARAE PAPIRO DE TU PAURE

At the end of the road stretching north from the bridge, on the Papiro site, stand the remains of King Tu Paure's Papiro marae , carefully preserved by the commune and its inhabitants. This site, dedicated to Tu, the mythical warrior and ancestor of the Pomare, houses his imposing flagstone seat, from which he watched over the pass to defend the atoll against any invaders. Legend has it that he could cross the pass in three strides in the event of an alert! The best thing to do is to go and admire the site in the company of a local guide... and check your shoes, just in case!
