The possibilities of hiking are endless in Nuku-Hiva, every mountain, every waterfall, every beach, every valley is an enchantment. Just know that you need good walking shoes, water and a mosquito lotion. Thus, you can go to adventure in the steep mountains of the island. For more perilous hikes, take a picnic, take clothes and waterproof bags for cameras, if you go through. At every corner of the island, you can find tikis or petroglyphs (not all ancient ones) buried in the vegetation, ignored by all, on the edge of a waterfall they seem to protect, or mea 'e, maintained by some residents of the valley bottom. It should be noted that several fires in recent years have destroyed a lot of vegetation.
Over Taiohae rises Mount Muake (864 m), a sharp peak whose summit is the flight point of the paragliders. Easy access, a carrossing trail from the Pakiu Valley (towards the airport) and winds along the mountain side through conifer and softwood forests. A few hours walk to enjoy a magnificent view of Taiohae and its bay.
Coming from the airport, you will surely pass through the Toovii plateau. At an altitude of 800 m, an unexpected freshness prevails over these pastures, where the few cows that supply meat and dairy products to the archipelago are quietly grazed.
With its cutting-edge relief, Nuku-Hiva offers several cascades among the highest in the world, at the bottom of which it makes a fresh and fresh water.
There are, of course, the villages with vanilla scents, the unexplored desert beaches, the archeological sites of Paeke and Hikokua, the bay of Anaho with the only coral platier of the Marquises, the Taipivai River, and so many other wonders…
