TEMEHEA SITE
Home of Putahaii, the mother of Chief Kiatonui, this place is steeped in history: it was here that the first links between Europeans and Marquesans were forged at the end of the 18th century, when Pastor Cook exchanged his name with the grandson of the great chief during the official Haaikoa ceremony. Abandoned at the beginning of the last century, it was reconstituted in Taiohae Bay on the occasion of the 11th Marquesas Islands Arts Festival in 1989. It conceals majestic stone sculptures.
