AGRICULTURAL AND ARTISANAL CULTURAL CENTRE
Created in 2014 on the initiative of the Ua Pou town council, the center's purpose is to offer services and amenities for locals and tourists alike in a friendly, shady location. Comprising four structures - the craft center, the agricultural cooperative, the bookshop and the museum - it is well worth a visit. Managed by a Ua Pou artisan committee (Te Tuhuka O Te Henua Enana), the craft center brings together some forty artisans. They include stone sculptures by Jean Kautai, Petero and Sylvain, wood carvings by Moana and Titi, Joseph Tahiatututapu and Tata Charles. Seed necklaces are made by Adélaïde or Bernadette. Irène's hats and head crowns, made of colorful fabric, are also superb. Madame is also the queen of mango jam... The agricultural cooperative, run by the Ao Pohue association, sells fruit and vegetables at attractive prices, and even offers lunches every day except weekends and public holidays. The bookshop, meanwhile, is one of the only Internet connection points in the area (reserved for customers), and is run by the very friendly Jacques Vitellini, a journalist by training and local correspondent for La Dépêche de Tahiti. Although open since 2014, it was inaugurated in November 2017. Last but not least, the local museum is still very modest, but just waiting to grow...
