CALVARY CEMETERY
The final resting place of two artists in love with the Marquesas Islands and having decided to end their days there. In the shade of a frangipani tree, Gauguin's tomb is composed of blocks of red tufa where one can read, engraved on a round pebble, "Paul Gauguin 1903". The "cursed painter" wanted the statue of Oviri to stand over his grave; it represents a mystical woman with a disturbing look and holding a cub in her hand, but only the replica remains. Brel, meanwhile, has been lying nearby since October 1978 in a carefully tended grave
