Overlooking the village, the stone remains of the French fort and the graves of the sailors who fell during Chief Iotete's rebellion bear witness to the Marquesas' turbulent and poignant past. Today, history has been honorably reconciled: a commemorative stele, erected in 1988, celebrates the meeting between Chief Iotete and Admiral Dupetit-Thouars in 1838. Another stele recalls the Franco-Marquis battle of 1842, underlining the resilience and memory of a people who overcame challenges and preserved their identity.
