FORTE DE SÃO SEBASTIÃO
Fort and castle, dedicated to São Sebastião, considered as 2 complementary pieces integrated into the same line of defense.
This fort occupies the place where a hermitage dedicated to São Sebastião existed. Its construction is due to King John IV and began in 1641, in the context of the wars of restoration with Spain. Its construction was adapted to the geography of the hill, resulting in an irregular enclosure, which incorporates five walls and whose main gate is oriented to the north, towards the village and the castle. The fort and the castle are not to be considered as separate entities but as two complementary pieces integrated in the same line of defence.
