The first site, surrounded by walls, is called "petit Gouldoursoun". The "big Gouldoursoun" is 10 km further on. The fortresses controlled and protected the irrigation canals. Legend has it that the daughter of the dekhan ruling the city fell in love with one of the enemies besieging the town, and betrayed her family by allowing the army to enter the walls. The unfortunate woman was then abandoned by her lover and the city fell into enemy hands. The same legend is told of Mizdakhan, the ancient city near Noukous.
