Armin Vambery recounts how, during his visit in 1863, the Khiva area was populated by "khauli", which he describes as small fortresses shaded by tall poplars and surrounded by fertile fields. Of these numerous mini-fortresses, only Chadra Khauli apparently remains, its original architecture perfectly suited to the unbearable heat of the summer months. A three-storey iwan overlay captures all the air currents, ventilates the spaces and serves as a watchtower, keeping a watchful eye on the surrounding area.
