NARANJO
A politically important site during the Classic period, with pelota courts and several monumental acropolises.
Of political importance during the Classic period, it seems that Naranjo had long diplomatic relations with several cities, sometimes enemies of Tikal. In spite of the innumerable plunders of which the site was victim throughout the XXth century, one can contemplate there pelota courts and some monumental acropolis. If the forty or so sculpted steles discovered in its various squares are preserved in the Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología de Guatemala Ciudad, stairs engraved with hieroglyphic signs are still visible.
