SANTA ROSA ISLAND

The 213 km2 island is a 3-hour crossing away. The boat drops passengers off at Bechers Bay jetty. Many spend the day here, picnicking, swimming and hiking. The most popular trail is to Water Canyon Beach - 4.8 km round trip from the jetty. Other trails cross the island and lead to Cherry Canyon, Black Mountain, Torrey Pines, Lobo Canyon and East Point, the longest at 25 km round trip. Bones of America's first mammoths, which lived nearly 13,000 years ago, have been found on the island.
