TEMPLO I
Templo I or Templo del Gran Jaguar, a 45-metre-high pyramid built around 700 by the ruler Jasaw Chan K'awiil.
Also called "Templo del Gran Jaguar", this 45 meter high pyramid closes the Gran Plaza. Built around the year 700 by the ruler Jasaw Chan K'awiil - known as Ah Cacao -, it later housed his tomb. The latter revealed an extraordinary treasure made up of a very large number of bones, as well as an important collection of jades. One last anecdote: the temple takes its name from the carved jaguar discovered in the lintel made of fir wood that was in the frame of the door of the altar, at the top of the building.
