This monastery was built in 1883 by the Order of Carmel, an order founded during the Crusades. It is also known as the Monastery of the "place of burning". This is because it stands on the highest point of the Carmel massif (497 m above sea level), where the prophet Elijah fought the prophets of Baal and caused fire to fall from heaven. The roof of the Carmel offers a splendid panoramic view of the surrounding area.
