Born in Jallanges in 1779, Anne-Marie Javouhey founded the Saint-Joseph de Cluny congregation in May 1807. In 1822, the minister of the time asked her for Senegal, which had just been attached to France. She discovered the misery and the heinous slave trade. Very quickly, she understood that she only had recourse to the purchase of black slaves to free them. In 1838, she was in Mana, Guyana, where she liberated 185 slaves on 13 May, ten years before the promulgation of the 1848 law. With the integration of the communes of Chamblanc, Jallanges and Seurre in the road to the abolition of slavery, Anne-Marie Javouey found herself alongside Toussaint Louverture, Victor Schœlcher, Abbé Grégoire and the inhabitants of Champagney who, on March 19, 1789, first launched the people's appeal against the slave trade and slavery.
To commemorate her action, on May 14, 2011, 147 trees were planted in the presence of the existing and identified descendants.
The Anne-Marie Javouhey family house, located in the grounds of the Anne-Marie Javouhey High School in Chamblanc, can be visited. Consisting of 18 panels, this exhibition, produced by the Chamblanc association in Mana, on the Route des Libertés and the Route de l'Abolition de l'Esclavage association, traces the journey of Anne-Marie Javouhey, founder of the Saint-Joseph de Cluny congregation and emancipator of slaves in Mana, Guyana.
