SITIO ARQUEOLÓGICO PACHACÁMAC
In Quechua, this name means "the soul of the world, the one who gives meaning to the world". This is the most important sanctuary on the central coast dedicated to the god Pachacamac (the giver of life), which reached its apogee in the 8th century and was still an important center when the Spaniards arrived. The Incas, concerned with the cohesion of the empire, maintained this deity in his temple. The site features adobe remains, walls decorated with human figures and fish, and idols carved from wood. When the weather's fine, you can enjoy a superb view from the main pyramid.
The visit is well worthwhile, especially as the new museum enhances the experience. Reconstructions have been made of the wooden idol of Pachacamac, and a richly detailed carved totem pole has been found.
You can also discover the site by bike with the bicitour: 2-hour tour on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., except on the1st Sunday of the month.
Acllawasi. Just beyond the entrance on the right is the House of the Elect, where women selected for their culinary, manual or beauty skills lived and worked. This was one of the largest and most important on the coast, hence this elegant building in polished adobe with large trapezoidal windows, surrounded by canals and water cisterns. It was rebuilt under the tutelage of Julio C. Tello. You can see it from the outside, and it's true that it doesn't lack presence.
Templo Pintado. Here we found a staircase painted red, then murals of fish, birds and plants enriched the work. Perhaps this was the original home of the Pachacamac idol. Unfortunately, the site has suffered considerable damage.
Templo Viejo. This impressive platform features millions of adobe bricks and a ramp, and is also the oldest. It dates from between 200 and 550 AD. Many offerings have also been found here.
Templo del Sol. This is the most imposing, facing the sea and the islands. On the east side, Max Uhle discovered in 1896 the cemetery of sacrificial women, probably from the elite, buried with a trousseau of woollen clothes and Inca crockery. This is the largest Templo del Sol on the Peruvian coast.
How to get there. Take a combi under the Benavides bridge (Av. Benavides and Panamericana Sur) towards Pachacamac/Lurin (45 min. and a few soles). Mirabus also offers this excursion.
