ALGAR DO CARVÃO CAVE
An impressive 80-metre-high volcanic cavity, whose formation is explained by a member of the guides' association
Right in the center of Terceira, the Algar do Carvão is an impressive 80-meter-high volcanic cavity. Its cone is covered in vegetation and provides a natural habitat for endemic species, which is why it is protected. The association of hiking guides Os Montanheiros, based in Angra do Heroísmo, is responsible for the preservation of this site, in collaboration with the Azores Regional Directorate for the Environment. A member of the association first explains the formation of this natural monument, and then you can descend to the very bottom of the cave, where there is a small lake (temporarily inaccessible in 2024). Be warned: all the steps you've climbed down will have to be climbed back up again, and this is generally a little rougher. There are a total of 338 steps; the tour is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
It's not possible to reserve a ticket in advance; entry is on a first-come, first-served basis. Access to the cave is limited to 150 people, so be sure to come as soon as it opens to secure your place! Even if you already have a combined ticket, you will not be given priority.
We advise you to check the timetable on the website, as additional days may be added in the low season. In 2024, the site will be closed for construction of the new visitor center. Official dates have not yet been announced, so please check before making the journey.
