FIRST DIAMOND MINE
A fascinating little museum featuring replicas of large stones.
Jackpot for Thomas Cullinan. In 1905, he discovered here a "Youkounkoun" to bring down Louis de Funès: a 3,106 carat stone, the largest diamond in history. Nine pieces were cut from this rough, including the 530-carat "Great Star of Africa", cut into a pear shape and mounted on the Queen of England's imperial scepter. The mine is still in operation, next to its 32-hectare Big Hole. There is an exciting small museum with replicas of the big stones and a cutting workshop where young people from disadvantaged communities work.
