MUSEE DU PAYS CHATILLONNAIS – TRESOR DE VIX
The beautiful Musée du Pays Châtillonnais - Trésor de Vix presents a representative collection from the Celtic and Gallo-Roman periods in France.
If you want to learn more about the Celtic and Gallo-Roman periods in France, the beautiful Musée du Pays Châtillonnais - Trésor de Vix is a must! The centerpiece of its collection? The Vix vase and its treasure: discovered in 1953 at the foot of Mount Lassois, the collection includes two Attic ceramic bowls, a gold torque, a silver phiale with gold umbilicus, a wine jug... and a vase that is absolutely unique in the world. 208 kg, 1.64 m high, 1.27 m in diameter and 1.2 mm thick: its dimensions give a good idea of the imposing size of this magnificently crafted vase, which can hold up to 1,100 liters! Its handles feature the face of the Gorgon Medusa, and the frieze around the vase depicts a succession of Greek soldiers and horse-drawn chariots. All these objects were discovered in the burial chamber of a Celtic princess, the Princesse de Vix. They also tell us a great deal about trade between the Vix region and the Mediterranean, even though this burial site dates from the early5th century... Fans of the Celtic and Gallo-Roman eras won't want to miss out, and for the rest of you, the museum boasts a collection that extends right up to the 19thcentury , with a beautiful area devoted entirely to ornithology! In addition, the museum offers one temporary exhibition a year.
