VARAKHSHA RUINS
Founded in the 1st century BC, it was the residence of the Bukhar-Khudat, the Hephthalite kings who ruled after the Kushans. At the time, the city exceeded Bukhara in size, covering some 100 hectares. When the Arab conquerors seized it, they killed King Sukan and destroyed his palace, then had the military leader beheaded for attempting a rebellion. Until the 12th century, the city remained a major economic center and border post. It ceased to exist in the 11th century due to the lack of water in the irrigation systems.
