With its two ecoregions, Yungas and Puna Norteña, the park offers a great diversity of flora and fauna. More than 100 species of plants and numerous animals inhabit the region's lagoons and bofedales. Visitors can enjoy several tourist attractions, such as the Pre-Columbian Trail, the Heart of the Protected Area, El Choro and the Death Road. The park was created in 1993 with the aim of protecting highly fragile areas, watersheds and pristine ecosystems. It covers an area of 61,266 hectares and is accessible from the city of La Paz by road or on foot via the pre-Hispanic El Choro trail. Daily buses run from La Paz to Coroico, where the Huarinilla River valley can be reached by car.
