RESERVA NACIONAL DE FAUNA ANDINA EDUARDO AVAROA
This reserve located in the southwest of the department of Potosi, shines by the richness of its flora and fauna
Created in 1973 and expanded in 1981, the reserve covers an area of 7,147 km2, in the southwestern part of the Department of Potosí, on the border with Argentina and Chile. It is undoubtedly the most beautiful part of South Lípez, one of the most fascinating journeys ever. All tours of the Salar de Uyuni and South Lípez that last several days pass through this fantastic reserve.
The tours are best done in the dry season. It is colder between May and August, but the weather is more stable and brighter. In summer, from December to April, it rains regularly.
Among the most amazing sites are different lagoons, the most famous of which are the laguna Verde, the laguna Colorada and the laguna Hedionda, geological formations such as theÁrbol de Piedra (the stone tree) and the Dalí desert, or the geysers of the geothermal zone of Sol de Mañana. Its most important peaks are the Licancabur and Uturuncu volcanoes.
The reserve also stands out for the richness of its flora and fauna: the reserve is home to about 80 different species of birds, and it is common to see the three different types of flamingos (the Andean flamingo, the Chilean flamingo and the James flamingo) and the Andean condor. Other species include the vizcacha de la sierra (a rodent of the chinchillidae family), the Andean fox, and the ñandú cordillerano (Darwin's rhea, a species similar to the ostrich).
