This majestic lagoon, famous for its ochre and rust colors, is located at 4 280 m of altitude
A majestic lagoon renowned for its ochre and rust colours located at an altitude of 4,280 m. Over 6,000 hectares in size, its mineral-rich waters abound with algae and plankton, attracting many pink flamingos who come to feast. The intensity of the colours between the white of the sediments (borax, gypsum and sodium) and the reddish and blue colour of the water is striking. In winter, the shores of the lagoon are frozen and a freezing wind blows in. Incredible contrast between the lagoon in the morning and in the late afternoon: the earlier you come in the morning, the clearer and more transparent the lagoon will be. As the day progresses, the sun will contribute to making this lagoon more and more ochre.
The colours are vibrant with beauty, nowhere else in the world will you see such a thing! Climb a little higher with your Jeep to get a bird's eye view of this natural wonder where the world's rarest species of James flamingos nest... They are named after the 1886 James Expedition, the very first to identify these birds and map the area (although, as you can see on the 1/50,000th maps, there are still unmapped mountains...). Other species share the site: Andean flamingos, Chilean flamingos, llamas, ducks, birds. The spectacle of nature unfolds before you. Happiness despite the climatic conditions which are, in the end, the price to pay for this privilege.
