This salt desert gave its name to the barracks located parallel to an improbable railway line that leads to the Ollagüe volcano, on the border with Chile, which rises to 5,868 metres. It is its fumaroles that can be seen in the distance from the valley of fossilized lava that looks like the planet Mars. In this still active volcano is the highest mine in the world... It is climbed from the Chilean side, and at its base you can see the ruins of two old sulphur mine settlements called Santa Rosa and Santa Cecilia.
