VISAGINAS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT (VALSTYBĖS ĮMONĖ IGNALINOS ATOMINĖ VALSTYBĖS)
Ignalina is most famous for its nuclear power plant, which is 65 km away, in Visaginas, built in 1975 by the Soviets to control the finishing work of the nearest Ignalina nuclear power plant. At the request of Brussels, Lithuania agreed, prior to its accession to the European Union on 1 May 2004, to stop on 31 December 2009 one of the two reactors at Ignalina and to close the plant completely in. This measure was demanded by the European Union for security reasons, with the plant being equipped with the same reactor type as Chernobyl. The Ignalina plant has a RBMK reactor with a power of 1 300 megawatts. The powerhouse, which supplied 70% of the country's electricity, closed in 2009, posing enormous energy problems in the country that sold half of its annual production. The European Union has promised financial aid for its closure, with costs estimated at between EUR 2 billion and EUR 3 billion over 30 years. The second reactor was closed on 31 December 2009. The station can visit.
