VIBOLDONE ABBEY
Abbey founded by the order of the Humiliated around 1170, an architectural mixture of Romanesque and Gothic.
Founded by the Order of the Humiliated around 1170, the construction of the abbey was not completed until the mid-14th century. Suppressed by Carlo Borromeo in 1571, the Order of the Humiliated was replaced by the Order of the Olivetans. Abandoned afterwards, it is only since 1941 that the abbey has returned to life thanks to the community of a few Benedictine sisters who still live there following the ora et labora rule. A small oasis of serenity, Viboldone is a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architectural vocabulary, the facade remains just as harmonious, with its red bricks and white stones, geminated bays and Lombardy bands. Above the portal, the sculpture of a Virgin in Majesty surrounded by the Saints is a work of the Maestri Campionesi. The interior, punctuated by massive round pillars, is decorated with frescoes remarkable for the brightness of their colours and the beauty of their workmanship, which reveal the influence of Giotto. In the right nave, there is a Madonna and Child with Saints (1395) attributed to Michelino da Besozzo and a Last Judgment, dated to the second half of the 14th century, a masterpiece by Giusto de' Menabuoi, clearly influenced by the school of Giotto. For those interested, seven times a day the sisters meet in prayer, from 5:30 in the morning to Vespers at 6:00 pm. A mystical moment in which all visitors can join if they wish. To meet their needs, they also work on the binding and printing of books... digital!
