VEJLE FINE ARTS MUSEUM (VEJLE KUNSTMUSEUM)
Comprehensive museum in Vejle with a collection of 124 paintings, sculptures, watercolors, pastels and more.
A comprehensive museum that alternates classical and contemporary works in an old building with ultra-modern spaces. The museum was founded in 1899 when Councilman Christian Eckardt donated about 2,000 drawings. The current collection consists of more than 15,000 works on paper, including engravings by Albrecht Dürer, Andrea Mantegna and Rembrandt (about 50). The collection was expanded in 1995 with the acquisition of the Wørzner collection, 124 paintings, sculptures, watercolors and pastels by young experimental artists from the late 1930s to 1945, precursors of the COBRA movement.
The first building occupied by the museum was bequeathed in 1924 by Agnes Benteline Hviid. A specific clause stated that if the museum did not come into being, the space could be converted into apartments for single women. In 2007, the latest extension, designed by Kim Utzon Architects, opened its doors, providing a large room for temporary exhibitions, a store and a studio.
Among the classic Danish painters, you will appreciate the works of Lundstrøm and his Model with stockings (1941), Anna and Michael Ancher, Ole Olsen, Jens Ferdinand Willumsen, reliefs by Bertel Thorvaldsen, but also paintings by the most famous Faroese painter: Sámal Joensen-Mikines. Among the contemporary artists: Asger Jorn, Else Alfelt, Carl-Henning Pedersen, Ejler Bille, Richard Mortensen, Robert Jacobsen and Henry Heerup.
