ESTANCIA LA CANDELARIA
Fort-like residence and sanctuary in La Candelaria, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000
The ruins are quite original, the whole presenting an aspect sometimes of a fortress, sometimes of a residence with a sanctuary. Indeed, the Jesuits had to face the malones, the plundering of the natives who refused to submit to colonization and evangelization. It was an important centre of agri-food production, mainly focused on the mule trade (traffic of goods to Upper Peru). The chapel is much more sober than at the previous site.
The estancia was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
