SHAKES ICELAND
Tiny island in Wrangell with totem poles offering a tour of the history of the culture of the native people.
This tiny island is located in the middle of Wrangell harbour. It is reached by taking a wooden mini-bridge to reach an Indian house, the Chief Shakes Longhouse, which served as a gathering place for the chiefs of the Tlingit Native American tribe. Totem poles, highly symbolic of First Nations culture, are erected around the house. You will be able to see inside the house the objects made and sculpted by these peoples. The visit is worth the detour and honours the predominant culture of the Aboriginal peoples.
