REAL MONASTERIO SAN ZOILO
The first documents mentioning this Cistercian monastery date back to 948. It was first dedicated to John the Baptist and later to San Zoilo, whose relics were brought back from Córdoba around 1075. But it was with the arrival of the Benedictine monks, resulting from the Cluny reform, that the monastery acquired its artistic, cultural and religious splendour. The visit to the cloister is a beautiful history lesson between the Old and New Testaments with its finely carved sculptures, including 230 portraits. In Plateresque style, it is one of the most important of the Spanish Renaissance. You will also discover two magnificent fabrics lined between the 10th and 11th centuries, well preserved. The church, for its part, contains a superb 17th century altarpiece, depicting several scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The monastery now houses a magnificent hotel, located in the former outbuildings of the Cluniac monks, where you can rest in complete peace and quiet.
