MUSEU DE ARTE CONTEMPORÂNEA - MAC
Contemporary art museum in the form of a flying saucer hanging from a rock, attracting visitors, aesthetes and philistines alike
The MAC in Niterói, or when the museum is already a work of art! You can see its characteristic flying saucer shape when you look out over Guanabara Bay from the Sugar Loaf. Niterói's Museum of Contemporary Art has become an attraction. Since its inauguration in 1996, it has attracted thousands of curious visitors, aesthetes and novices alike. Today, the MAC is the city's spatial marker, like the Space Needle is for Seattle. The peripheral vision offers a magnificent view of the Bay of Rio. It's like a postcard photo, with the impression of encountering postmodernity as it was imagined in the 50s or 60s. Some would say that the show is (exclusively) on the outside, for this establishment is above all spectacular for its flying saucer shapes hanging from a rock, the fruit of sketches conceived in the office of the father of Brasilia. Detractors criticize the artistic direction for the paucity of the exhibitions on offer, but while it's true that the works suffer in comparison with the aesthetics of the premises, they do have the merit of presenting renowned Brazilian and international artists. Last but not least, the artistic collection is regularly enriched by donations from artists who have exhibited at the MAC. Crossing the bay, by bridge or ferry, is now a must for those wishing to experience the image of Brazilian postmodernism through the prism of its greatest architect.
