On the asphalt road to Cyangugu, you can take a track on the right to Shangi. You reach the old German post after 14.5 km. The place is historic: it was here that the German explorer Richard Kandt, discoverer of the southern sources of the Nile and founder of Kigali, stayed. It is also here that Belgians and Germans established the borders between the two countries at the beginning of the 20th century. The German owner of the place, Manfred, narrowly escaped the genocide and only owed his salvation to his escape to the Congo on a fisherman's pirogue.
