Less well known and less frequented by visitors than their southern counterparts, the backwaters of northern Kerala offer an interesting alternative. There are several possibilities: departure from Chandragiri, 4 km from Kasaragod, close to the 17th-century fort, or a cruise around the island of Valiyaparamba, around which lie a multitude of small islands, most of them uninhabited. This government-approved agency has an office in Nileshwar and another in Kannur. Several cruise packages are available.
