MARUDHAMALAI MURUGAN TEMPLE
hilltop temple dedicated to Murugan, featuring a Pambatti Siddhar cave near the staircase
This very beautiful temple of the XIIth century, characteristic of the Tamil Dravidian style, is located at the top of a hill. The venerated deity is Murugan, son of Shiva and Parvati, brother of Ganesh. He is the god of war. Near the big staircase, one can see the cave of Pambatti Siddhar, one of the 18 siddhars of the Tamil Hindu tradition (person having reached the illumination). While he was doing penance on the hill, Murugan appeared to him in the form of a snake.
