ST EUTHYMIUS MONASTERY
Founded in 420, the Euthymius laurel was a group of small cells carved out of the rock. The first church was consecrated in 428. After Euthymius' death in 473, the church was used as a refectory, and a new church was built above the old one, complete with a cenobium (a place where novices were taught). The new church was consecrated by Martyrius, Patriarch of Jerusalem, in 482, and the laurel was renamed St. Euthymius Monastery. Today, you can visit the impressive 3,000m3 cistern in the middle of an unpleasant industrial zone.
