This former Ottoman caravanserai at the gateway to the desert dates from the 19thcentury . Entirely restored, it houses a fine museum where numerous Byzantine mosaics (4th-7th centuries) have been reconstructed from excavations in the West Bank and Gaza. These include the remains found on the site of the nearby Martyrius monastery (5th century). In the courtyard, the remains of a Byzantine church have been preserved. The mosaic floors have been looted, so this is a reconstruction.
