THE SITE OF THE CANAL PORT
A site installed on the old commercial port with a false air of the Riviera
There is no shortage of places to stroll in the open air in Dijon and this one is very pleasant. A whole site installed on the former commercial port with a false air of the Riviera between its marina, a three-hectare river basin and a vast shaded pleasure garden. Dijon residents and visitors love to relax there, especially in summer when it is good to enjoy a picnic. There are a host of facilities for sports and activities for young and old, not to mention the regular events that make this place a source of pleasure for all. The barge Cancale, a figurehead of Dijon's cultural life, has been moored in the port since 2009. The nearby Minoterie and the future Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin (International City of Gastronomy and Wine) are also good reasons to visit the district.
To see: the obelisk, in the centre of the esplanade, a monument commemorating the laying of the first stone of the Burgundy canal by Prince Louis V Joseph de Bourbon-Condé, in 1784, the sculpture the Winged Dream, a tribute to Gustave Eiffel, born in Dijon in 1832 near the port of the Burgundy canal. Finally, you should know that the first weekend in June is traditionally the occasion for a large outdoor district festival: Port du canal en fête with water jousting, sports demonstrations, dance shows, circus or concerts are on the program.
To do: a bike path follows the towpath along the Canal de Bourgogne to join the valley of the Ouche.
