Small fountain decorated with beautiful azulejos, with a Spanish Jesuit priest giving catechism lessons to the Indians
This small fountain built in 1553 is decorated with beautiful azulejos. It is at its foot that the Spanish Jesuit priest José Anchieta (who was a writer, playwright and poet), an important character in the colonization of Brazil, gave catechism classes to the Indians. This priest, like all Jesuit missionaries, tried to protect the Amerindians of the region from the savagery of the colonizers. On the same square, you can see a statue of the priest and several traditional shops selling sweet treats.
