Pinacoteca in a neoclassical villa dating from 1900, featuring paintings and drawings by the artist Benedicto Calixto
The Benedicto Calixto Gallery is housed in this 1900 neoclassical villa, which contains 53 paintings and drawings by the artist, one of the country's leading painters of the early 20th century. Born in Itanhaém, on the southern coast of the state of São Paulo, Calixto moved to Santos at the age of 18 and did odd jobs in painting. Little by little, he began to paint frescoes and ceilings, and finally dedicated himself to canvas and oil painting. Portraits, rural and urban landscapes and religious scenes are among his most frequent themes.
