STRONG DE SÃO JOÃO
The country's oldest fort, fully restored and now welcoming tourists and temporary exhibitions
The oldest fort in the country was built by the Portuguese to protect the region from attacks by the Tupinambas Indians. Closed in 1996, it was completely restored in 2001 to accommodate tourists and temporary exhibitions. A boat trip leaves from the fort to the Praia de Iporanga. Like the "orange fort" on the island of Itamaraca, it is a typical construction of Portuguese colonial forts, plastered with lime and with simple geometric forms. Some cannons still stand proudly. An interesting little museum explains the history of the fort.
