The Gramado Film Festival in August has been one of the most important film festivals in Brazil for 40 years.
Since 1973, the small town of Gramado, near Porto Alegre in the south of the country, has welcomed numerous filmmakers, actors and film enthusiasts every year during the second week of August. Today, the festival is a key venue for disseminating, discussing and motivating artistic creation. Cinema accounts for 0.5% of Brazil's GDP. Some twenty feature-length films compete for the "Kikitos" and thirty short films.
