Karaganda is on the Astana-Almaty line, and most Talgo high-speed trains stop here... after 13 hours from Almaty, or after 4.5-5 hours from Astana. Tickets cost KZT 500 to 1,500 from Astana, depending on the class chosen, and KZT 2,000 to 3,800 from Astana. Several trains a day shuttle between the cities. From Almaty, it's best to choose a night train to save a day and a night in a hotel, unless you're determined to stare at the steppe for 12 hours..
