NORTH SHORE: BALKHASH
On the north shore of the lake, the town of Balqash was founded by the Soviets in 1937 to accommodate workers working in the surrounding copper mines. It is indeed in this region that the largest copper mines in the country are located. It is not the most envied city in the country. Over time, and the proximity of the lake, fishing activity was developed in parallel with the metallurgy. The waters of the lake, which are very rich in fish, feed all local niches and have an important dimension in the regional economy.
