GAITOR'S CENOTAPHS
Funerary monuments erected on the cremation grounds of maharajas, giving the impression of strolling through small palaces
Far from the hubbub of the pink city, the place offers a restful stop. Imposing funerary monuments in white marble or ochre sandstone were built on the cremation site of the maharajas. The columned halls topped by a majestic dome form an amazing ensemble. Some are decorated with sculptures representing apsaras or musicians. The most impressive is that of Jai Singh II with its 20 sculpted columns. The place is not morbid. One has rather the impression to wander in the middle of miniature palaces in the flamboyant rajpoute style.
