GALTA TEMPLES
Temples offering a place of pilgrimage in a narrow gorge with 2 pools near the spring, a place to purify oneself
The temples of Galta are also known as the "temple of the monkeys". A miraculous water source would be at the origin of this place of pilgrimage nested in a narrow gorge. The site is said to have taken in the ascetic Galtav who meditated here and sanctified the place centuries ago. Bathing in one of the two pools near the spring would purify one's soul and help in one's path to deliverance.
The access is made by a path bordered by a temple and a dharamsala displaying magnificent frescoes partly restored. The guardian of the temple of Hanuman will quickly lure you to show you the idol of the temple, which is of no interest. This is only to extort a donation for the temple, so go on your way.
As you continue, you arrive at the base of a temple preceded by a large basin used as a watering place for the numerous monkeys of the site. Take the stairs along this temple on the right. At the top, is the most sacred temple of the site. It is in this cave that Galtav would have come to meditate. The Brahmin, if he is not busy with rituals, will be happy to tell you the history of the place and to exchange with you.
Continuing on the trail, you reach the ridge line overlooking Jaipur and cross a few shrines, including a temple dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, the mythical ancestor of the Kachhwaha. You will also come across some affable sadhus and monkeys. From there, count 20 minutes of walk to find the avenues of Jaipur.
