BADA BAGH
Ancient garden of the sovereigns of Jaisalmer with cenotaphs in memory of each sovereign, to be visited at sunset
Bada Bagh is a former garden of the rulers of Jaisalmer, where cenotaphs are also erected in memory of each ruler. They are built on a hill located upstream of a small lake, in a bucolic and very green setting, which is unusual in this desert part of India. Under the dome of each chhatri, a small stele commemorates a sati, the immolation of the wife of the deceased, formerly considered as an honorable act. The site is mostly visited at sunset, rarely formidable, and this despite the establishment of a wind farm next door.
