KIRADU TEMPLES
Set of 5 temples with sculptures typical of the Solanki period, among the few archaeological sites in the region
This set of 5 temples is nicknamed "the Khajuraho of Rajasthan" because of the erotic scenes carved on the outside of the temples. Dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries, they show a very interesting architectural beauty. The richness and finesse of the carvings are typical of the Solanki period, a dynasty that ruled Gujarat and Kathiawar until the 14th century. They are also among the rare archaeological sites of Rajasthan. Indeed, these temples are no longer consecrated and can be visited as a historical site.
The best preserved temple is that of Someshvara. Dedicated to Shiva, it includes many sculptures of the god as well as episodes of the Ramayana. The outer walls are also decorated with swarms ofapsaras (dancing nymphs) and vyalas (griffins usually associated with Buddha). Inside the sanctuary, you will discover a very nice representation of Shiva.
A legend is associated with the temples of Kiradu. An ancient sage left his disciple in the care of the people of Kiradu. But except for the potter's wife, no one took care of him. When the sage realized that his request had not been taken into account, he cast a spell on the village. He had previously warned the potter's wife to leave the village without looking back. She couldn't help but take one last look over her shoulder as she left. She was immediately transformed into a statue. This one is still visible on the outskirts of the village.
