Multisecular and imposing, the Nakayima tree is solidly anchored to the Mubende hill, which dominates the eponymous city. Known for its buttresses, this venerable woody plant is said to shelter the males of Nakayima, the first wife of King Ndahura, legendary founder of the Cwezi dynasty in the 15th century. Considered to be a goddess with thaumaturgic and psychic powers (she was said to serve as an intermediary between the spirits of Ndahura and the community), Nakayima is the object of a cult whose offerings, deposited at the foot of the tree, attest to her practice.
