Built between 1931 and 1941 by Italian Catholic missionaries, consecrated in 1947, visited by Pope John Paul II in 1993 and restored during the 2000s, St. Joseph's Cathedral, 2.5 km west of the city center, stands out in Uganda's architectural landscape. It's not the myriad bricks, nor the Latin cross floor plan, that give this building its originality, but its neo-classical frontispiece, trompe-l'œil and baldachin... In short, Gulu has a touch of Italy about it!
