Eucalyptus forests, rainforests, woodlands, oceanfront cliffs and beaches make up most of the 16,000 ha of this park. Founded in 1879 by Sir John Robertson, then Premier of New South Wales, it is the second oldest national park in the world, after Yellowstone in the United States. It took its name in 1955, after Queen Elizabeth II, crossed it to Wollongong during her visit to Australia in 1954. It is a popular destination for Sidneysiders, especially on weekends.
